Puerto Rico Wants You To Visit

Puerto Rico travel

An amazing thing happened at a recent meeting I had with tourism officials from Puerto Rico. Instead of discussing the long term negative effects on tourism from the recent destructive hurricane, they started talking about Spring Break. Puerto Rico’s message to the world is: Please come visit and be part of their comeback!

I was as surprised as you probably are. Continue reading “Puerto Rico Wants You To Visit”

How to Help Puerto Rico

How to Help Puerto Rico

Over the past two decades I’ve visited Puerto Rico on nearly a dozen vacations. I circumvented the island numerous times, marveled at the hospitality, enjoyed the Latin culture, sunned on the beautiful beaches under palm trees, told friends and readers to visit, and appreciated that this island was a bit of America with it’s own unique heritage.

I’ve been bringing my son Aidan, now 14, since he was an infant.  From charming abuelas who would pinch his toddler chubby cheeks in the  street to learning to speak Spanish and making new friends as a teen — Puerto Rico means so much to him too.

Puerto Rico

To see the island flattened by Hurricane Maria hurts. To watch the almost hostile response to the crises from our government as the island copes with both the lack of electricity and running water is painful, frustrating, and completely flabbergasting.

As travelers, I try to teach my son that it’s imperative to be citizens of the world, to help where and when help is needed. We’ve been contributing to funds to help other islands affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, but today, it’s time to help Puerto Rico.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Spring Break Sweet 16

Spring Break

Q: Hi Playground: Do you have any ideas for a sweet 16 trip for late April spring break? It will be four of us: My daughter and her friend and me and the other mom. The girls want somewhere warm with a beach and other kids their age and we’d be there 3-4 nights. The girls are interested in Atlantis, the moms were hoping for something not quite as hectic. ~ Thank you! Shari S.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Two Week Puerto Rico Getaway with a Toddler

Q: Hi Playground! I’m headed to Puerto Rico with my husband and two year old in March. What is your best advice on top things to do with a toddler? Would you make any changes to the itinerary below? Is it worth driving all the way to Cabo Rojo? If you picked three of the four places, which would you recommend? A little about us: Pre-baby we loved active adventure vacations. We are still up for a little adventure, but we are realistic that we want to travel easier with a toddler:

Days 1 – 4: San Juan, Caribe Hilton: Old town, castillo, kids museum, Camuy caves, beach
Days 5 – 7: Cabo Rojo, vacation rental: beaches, hiking, salt flats
Days 8 – 11: Fajardo, El Conquistador Resort: El Yunque and resort activities
Days 12 – 14: Vieques (need a hotel): Beaches, Bioluminescent Bay (we’ll split up two nights to do this without toddler)

~ Thanks! Kelly

Puerto Rico

Q: Hi, I’m wondering about going to Puerto Rico for a girlfriend getaway weekend. Are there any resorts you would recommend? This is for a girls trip, so definitely looking for a spot that’s kind of lively, nice pool and beach and good food. We’re shooting for a 5 day/4 night trip in late June. Any insight you have would be great! — Brett S.
