Pumpkin Picking in Orange County, New York

Pumpkin Picking in Orange County, New York

Every year my family heads up to the Hudson Valley and Warwick, NY just over the border from Vernon, NJ, for fall fun. We go apple picking and hiking along the Appalachian Trail in September, sampling cider and warm cider doughnuts as we go. But come October, we turn our thoughts to finding the perfect pumpkin for Halloween in the expansive farms of aptly named Orange County.

While you’re in the area, the town of Warwick is filled with lovely independent shops and places to eat. My family also loves Warwick Valley Winery which has live music on weekend afternoons and a fabulous cafe that serves truffle fries and delicious wood-oven pizza.

Here’s your guide for Pumpkin Picking in Orange County, New York! The farms below offer pick your own pumpkins and plenty of other entertainment for families:

#TravelTuesday Q&A: New York State for a Family Christmas Getaway

The historic Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, NY

Q:  My two teenagers and I want to get away for Christmas to someplace where we’ll have snow, but isn’t a ski area. I’d like it to be a reasonable drive from New Jersey, but still be far enough away that we feel like we’re not near home. And something that won’t break the bank, but that gives my daughter a relaxing break from college and let’s my son and I soak in the holiday spirit. Too tall an order? Any suggestions? Thanks! ~ CS

Bring the Whole Family for a Mid-Hudson Valley Getaway

It started with lunch. Or I should say my son Aidan’s desire to have lunch at the CIA (that’s Culinary Institute of America, not the government spying branch), in Hyde Park, NY. We’ve visited before and my junior foodie was suitably impressed – even getting one of our waiters at the French Bocuse restaurant to take us into the kitchen and have the chef sign a menu on our last visit.

Although I’m happy to visit the scenic campus, it’s almost a 2-hr drive from most of the New York Metro area, including, our home in New Jersey, to the beautiful Hudson River location, turning a long lunch into a 6-hr roadtrip trip. So instead of just lunching, we chose to make it a two-day getaway to explore the Mid-Hudson Valley. And I’m happy to say there was more to experience in the area than we could have possibly done in the time we had — all of it great, including art, history, and the longest pedestrian bridge in the world! AND we had the dog with us, who had a grand time as well.

How’d we do it? Read on:

Day Trip: Storm King Art Center

Barnet Newman, Obelisk
Barnet Newman, Obelisk

Colorful sculptures as tall as houses, a pop-art mermaid stretched across a lake, an electric orange streak stretching straight into the sky—Storm King Art Center is a bit like the Willy Wonka of art, over the top, sure, but ultimately sweet fun.

Set on 500 acres of rolling grounds in the lower Hudson Valley (about an hour north of NYC), expansive Storm King feels like a cross between a park and a sculpture museum, with more than 100 mostly larger than life sculptures set among trees, hills, rocks and expansive stretches of green.
