Family Fun and Retro Charm Down the Shore at Morey’s Piers Wildwood

Wildwood

For summer fun and a real Jersey Shore experience — one full of Boardwalk games and treats, amusement park rides, a beach so wide you can take a taxi to the water, and a charming retro vibe — take the family to The Wildwoods in New Jersey.

Despite being a born and bred Jersey girl, I had only been to northern Jersey beaches, and had never gone as far south as Exit 4 when heading down the Shore. That all changed last weekend when my family was invited on a trip hosted by Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Waterparks. (Thanks Morey family!)

Family owned and operated since 1969 by the Morey Brothers, the amusement park and resorts have managed to keep their retro charm despite the additions of looping suspended roller coasters, major waterparks with 6 foot drops, and a few too many tacky T-shirt shops on the Boardwalk.

Avenue Beach Club: Modern Luxury at the Jersey Shore’s French Riviera

Avenue Beach Blub offers the Riviera on at Jersey Shore

Just a little over an hour away from my home in Montclair, NJ, is a little slice of the French Riviera on the Jersey Shore. And I had no idea. That is, until last weekend when I was invited to be a guest for the day at Avenue Le Club.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Dog Days of Summer

Have Kids, Will Travel

Starting this week, we’ll be answering your travel questions on Tuesdays–everything from how and when to get the kids a passport to the best beaches in the United States. We’re starting it off with a question close to my family’s heart: Where to take your pet in the literal “dog days” of summer:

Q: Is there an easy to reach New Jersey beach destination where I can take the kids AND bring the dog? – Ken

A: Happily, the answer is YES. The Jersey Shore has gotten a lot pet friendlier recently and there are two travel-worthy options in the southern beach towns that my family and I uncovered:

Seven Miles of Smiles: Stone Harbor and Avalon, NJ

CJlHCTLUkAYOAJ_

I’m a Jersey Girl, and as such I have a deep affection for “the Shore” (in fact, I’m in August’s Family Fun Magazine sharing my favorite NJ beach spots). But until I was an adult, I had no idea of the wonders of the 7 miles of barrier island that comprises Avalon and Stone Harbor about 30 minutes north of Cape May. It’s a world away from the spinning rides and neon lights of boardwalk-enhanced towns; instead, there are loads of small shops that run the gamut from surf to swank, spacious and clean beaches, bike lanes that line the 25mph max roads, and tons of (mostly) unplugged family fun.

stone harborWhile my family has rented houses over the past two decades, a stretch of hotels and motels straddle the town lines mid-island near 80th street. The chicest and best situated of these is the remodeled Windrift which opens right onto the beach and has a multilevel series of restaurants and bars.

Want to experience the white sands and rolling surf of Stone Harbor and Avalon? Here are my  personal recommendations for surf and smiles:

Old Time Charm in Ocean Grove, New Jersey and Fun at Asbury Park

ocean grove

A national historic treasure with authentic Victorian homes, a beautiful beach, a boardwalk, and a quaint hometown Main Street—Ocean Grove, NJ offers one square mile of old fashioned Jersey Shore fun only an hour’s drive from NYC (to the north) and Philadelphia (to the south), making it a perfect day trip destination.

We were invited down to the Grove to spend the 4th with friends who vacation there every summer. And in just one day (and night) we fell in love with the sweet shore town.
