New york city trip

Q: Hi Playground! I would love some recommendations for exploring NYC with my 13-year-old nephew from North Carolina. He’s a drummer and loves live music. Any thoughts?? ~ Thanks, LF

A: Hi LF! A music loving teen? You’ve come to the right place! Georgette and I both have 13-year-olds who fall squarely into this category.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: A Broadway With Kids Weekend in New York City

Broadway with kids

Q:  Hi Playground! We’re taking our 8-year-old daughter to NYC for 3 days over spring break. We’re staying in Times Square and have some New York must-sees such on our list such as Ellis Island and Empire State Building, but we’d also love to see some Broadway shows. We’ve seen many of the kid friendly ones (Lion King, Aladdin, Wicked) but I don’t know what’s new. We’d also like to hit the DŌ Cookie Dough Confections. Any advice would be welcome. ~ Thanks, LHL

A: Hi LHL! A Broadway-themed long weekend for Spring Break sounds like a great idea!

There are two new plays currently in previews that I think would be a great fit for a theater-loving grade schooler (plus, you’ll be able to buy them at reasonable face value prices as opposed to spending hundreds of dollars a piece on, say, a presidential-themed musical).

Giveaway: 4 Tickets to Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour on Broadway

Cirque du Soleil Paramour

WINNER: CONGRATULATIONS TO GRETCHEN GODWIN!!!

Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour is the rare show that pleases both adults and kids equally, combining edge-of-your-seat, high-flying trapeze and tumbling acts with a toe-tapping original Broadway musical that harkens back to the Golden Age of Hollywood. My family recently saw a performance and everyone in my group, spanning a 60 year age range, raved about the show for weeks after we saw the unique combination of circus-meets-musical theater.

Now it’s your turn to take your family to Paramour — for free!

Kid-Friendly Broadway: Matilda the Musical

Matilda the Musical

Some of my fondest childhood memories were made on Broadway in NYC. I was obsessed with musicals as a child and dreamed of seeing my name in lights on the Great White Way. I even loved that old Milford Plaza commercial with the hotel staff singing The Lullaby of Broadway–remember that?

I never made it to the Broadway stage, but my dad, who didn’t have much money, saved to take me to a few shows and it meant the world to me. Now I’m able to share the Broadway experience with my girls. Taking the kids to Broadway is a wonderful way to get some family culture in and enjoy the best of NYC. And there are some fabulous kid-friendly shows to see.

After scoring 2-for-1 tickets for Broadway Week, we saw Matilda the Musical at Shubert Theater and I’m still singing the show tunes in the shower.
