The annual Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is a one of the highlights of the winter holiday season in New York City for families. Especially those with kids who are train fanatics (if you have kids who love Thomas the Train, or anything that moves on tracks, you know what we mean).

#TravelTuesday Q&A: New York State for a Family Christmas Getaway

gideon putnam resort saratoga springs | family travel
The historic Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, NY

Q:  My two teenagers and I want to get away for Christmas to someplace where we’ll have snow, but isn’t a ski area. I’d like it to be a reasonable drive from New Jersey, but still be far enough away that we feel like we’re not near home. And something that won’t break the bank, but that gives my daughter a relaxing break from college and let’s my son and I soak in the holiday spirit. Too tall an order? Any suggestions? Thanks! ~ CS

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Presidents’ Day Family Getaways

Universal-Beginner4

Q: We have a week off for a Presidents’ Day winter break from school and I haven’t planned anything yet. Is it too late for something like London or Orlando? Where would you recommend from the New York area for a February family vacation? –Melissa R.

Mountain Creek – New Jersey’s Snow Zone

Mountain Creek

With 8 lifts, 46 trails, a terrain park, and 30 lanes of snow tubing on 146 acres, Mountain Creek, the closest ski resort to NYC, is a perfect snowy day getaway, and one my family takes advantage of often. OK, we know Vernon, NJ, isn’t Colorado, or Utah, or even Vermont, but having skiing, snowboarding, and tubing, right in northern New Jersey is a pretty great perk of living in the NY Metro area. In less time than it takes to watch a movie, you can get up to Vernon (47 miles from the George Washington Bridge; about an hour from my home in Montclair), and be suited up and on the slopes.

Although the ski area has changed owners (and names) several times, improvements are always being implemented to keep the resort modern. There’s super premium snowmaking equipment and fast gondolas from when Intrawest (who own Stratton, Vermont, and Winter Park, Colorado, resorts among others) was the owner, plus plenty of neighborly deals from the New Jersey-based current owners.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Easy Family Getaways for Christmas Break

Easy Family Getaways for Christmas Break
The Sagamore Resort

Q: My husband’s birthday is Christmas Day (really) and I’d love to surprise him with a short family vacation at a resort that our two boys, who are 11 and 6, will like, too. Something we can get to within a few hours’ drive of New Jersey/New York  that has a bit of holiday spirit (thinking ice skating and s’mores) would be great. Thanks! — Ellen C.
