#TravelTuesday Q&A: London for Families

London for Families

Q: Hi Playground — My husband, 12-year-old son, 19-year-old daughter, and I are taking advantage of the low fares to England and spending a week in London in July. Now that we have our travel sorted out, I’m wondering what family friendly London sights and activities we should have on our must see list when we get there. Any don’t miss or surefire teen pleasers? Thanks! ~ Jen F.

A: Hi Jen! Great to hear your family is headed to London, it’s one of my favorite cities in Europe and it definitely needs a little TLC from travelers right now. You are actually the third family I’ve heard from recently who’s headed to London this summer with teens and tweens wondering what to do. I’ve got a few crowd pleasers up my sleeve, but remember that every kid, and family is unique, so if your kids love shopping, or art, or theater, be sure to add in extra time for those.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Concerns About Carry On Luggage

Carry On Luggage

Q:  Hi Playground!  I’m taking the kids to Orlando for Memorial Day weekend and I want us each to take a carry-on bag.  I’m concerned both about the cost of checking bags for a family of four and also of waiting for our bags after a late arriving flight in Orlando. We’re flying United, which has a carry on luggage size limit of 22″ x 14″ x 9″, but every bag I’ve looked at online and in person has measured larger than this, despite being labeled as 20″ or 21″ bags. Will these still be okay? Thanks in advance for your thoughts! ~ Jennifer

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Beachside Getaways in Waikiki, Hawaii

Waikiki, Hawaii

Q: We’re heading to Oahu over the summer and would love to find a beachside hotel in Waikiki. Any suggestions? Thanks! ~ FM

A: Hi FM, Hawaii is beach paradise, and Waikiki is among the best known, and most beautiful sandy spots on Oahu. But not all hotels are directly on the beach.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: New York City Trip for a Music Loving Teen

New york city trip

Q: Hi Playground! I would love some recommendations for exploring NYC with my 13-year-old nephew from North Carolina. He’s a drummer and loves live music. Any thoughts?? ~ Thanks, LF

A: Hi LF! A music loving teen? You’ve come to the right place! Georgette and I both have 13-year-olds who fall squarely into this category.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: A Broadway With Kids Weekend in New York City

Broadway with kids

Q:  Hi Playground! We’re taking our 8-year-old daughter to NYC for 3 days over spring break. We’re staying in Times Square and have some New York must-sees such on our list such as Ellis Island and Empire State Building, but we’d also love to see some Broadway shows. We’ve seen many of the kid friendly ones (Lion King, Aladdin, Wicked) but I don’t know what’s new. We’d also like to hit the DŌ Cookie Dough Confections. Any advice would be welcome. ~ Thanks, LHL

A: Hi LHL! A Broadway-themed long weekend for Spring Break sounds like a great idea!

There are two new plays currently in previews that I think would be a great fit for a theater-loving grade schooler (plus, you’ll be able to buy them at reasonable face value prices as opposed to spending hundreds of dollars a piece on, say, a presidential-themed musical).

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Spring Break Sweet 16

Spring Break

Q: Hi Playground: Do you have any ideas for a sweet 16 trip for late April spring break? It will be four of us: My daughter and her friend and me and the other mom. The girls want somewhere warm with a beach and other kids their age and we’d be there 3-4 nights. The girls are interested in Atlantis, the moms were hoping for something not quite as hectic. ~ Thank you! Shari S.

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Fun Family Budget Hotels in New York City

Family Budget Hotels in New York City

Q:  Hi Playground! I’m thinking of surprising my family with a trip to New York City this summer to see a Yankees game. I would love suggestions on affordable hotels in NYC that would fit a family of four. The few times we have gone we have stayed in New Jersey. Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks! ~ KJK

A: Hi KJK! What a great idea for a trip! I always think New York City is a great family destination, but I know hotels can sometimes seem prohibitively priced. Luckily, however, there are a few hotels I know of that offer either more space, a few extra perks, or just a great price, for families.

Here are a few fun family budget hotels in New York City I recommend to friends and family:

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Spring Break in Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs California | family travel

Q:  Hi, I’m planning a spring break in California. We’d love to go to Palm Springs, but it turns out that the Coachella music festival takes place around the same dates. Can we still make it work? And do you think two teen boys (14 and 18) will like the California desert? ~ Thanks! MR
