Great November Getaways for NJ Teachers’ Convention School Break

Getaways for NJ Teachers' Convention | mid-hudson valley family travel

Guess what New Jersey parents? Your kids are about to have a 4-day weekend! November 9 – 12 is the NJEA Convention, aka the NJ Teachers’ Convention, when all public schools are closed while teachers attend a professional development conference in Atlantic City. Why not take advantage of the break and plan a getaway with the family?

The good news is that the crowds are usually thin, and prices low, for this long weekend in many destinations since only New Jersey public schools have off. (Which is not to say there are no crowds. At Disney World these November dates are called “New Jersey Week,” and the theme parks — and flights to Orlando, and actually Florida in general — are packed! And if you ask your kids, they’d probably like to avoid seeing their teachers in Atlantic City….)

Ready to take a break? Here are some great getaway options for NJ Teachers’ Convention School Break:

Pumpkin Picking in Orange County, New York

Pumpkin Picking in Orange County, New York

Every year my family heads up to the Hudson Valley and Warwick, NY just over the border from Vernon, NJ, for fall fun. We go apple picking and hiking along the Appalachian Trail in September, sampling cider and warm cider doughnuts as we go. But come October, we turn our thoughts to finding the perfect pumpkin for Halloween in the expansive farms of aptly named Orange County.

While you’re in the area, the town of Warwick is filled with lovely independent shops and places to eat. My family also loves Warwick Valley Winery which has live music on weekend afternoons and a fabulous cafe that serves truffle fries and delicious wood-oven pizza.

Here’s your guide for Pumpkin Picking in Orange County, New York! The farms below offer pick your own pumpkins and plenty of other entertainment for families:

Apple Picking in New Jersey and New York

The breezy temperatures are a sign that autumn is near, which has us thinking about apples. Apple picking that it! Thankfully, we’re lucky to live within reach of some of the area’s best apple orchards in New Jersey and New York State.

These farms offer much more than just apples. Plan a day trip and enjoy hayrides, corn mazes, live music, ad markets that sell melt-in-your-mouth autumn treats (like apple cider doughnuts, yum!). How do you like them apples?
