The Ultimate Guide to a Rhine River Cruise

Rhine River Cruise AmaWaterways

A cruise down the Rhine River shines a spotlight on everything that’s great about river cruises in Western Europe. While you float along one of the most important waterways in the world, you’ll touch land in four different countries—the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland—visiting big cities such as Amsterdam and Zurich, smaller centers like Cologne and Strasbourg, and the tiny towns that give the river its heart and soul (but that big cruise ships could never get near), such as darling Riquewihr in France’s unique Alsace region.

I rolled down the river on AmaWaterways “Enchanting Rhine” itinerary, and got the inside scoop on the myriad charms of the Rhine River’s ports of call and castle-laden scenery. (Note: Adventures by Disney uses AmaWaterways for its family-friendly European cruise itineraries, but Ama is comfortable for families who like to travel on their own as well.)

Read on for the A to Z highlights as you sail from Amsterdam to Zurich (note that river cruises also do the reverse Switzerland to Netherlands trip).
Ready to set sail? Let’s roll!

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Easy Summer Family Cruise Options

cruise | family travel

Q: Hi Playground! We are trying to possibly plan our first “real” family cruise. I tried looking up family cruises, but the information I got was overwhelming with not only different cruise lines, but also all the various ships within each line. We don’t need anything extravagant, just something for an almost 6 year old boy to enjoy. We are thinking June or July. I think it might be nice not to have to fly, however we live in Pittsburgh, so we’ll have to drive a bit to get to any port. Any suggestions? Thanks! ~ Rebecca

#TravelTuesday Q&A: DIY Caribbean Cruise Excursions

Caribbean Cruise Excursions Old San Juan, Puerto Rico | family travel

Q: Hi Playground! What is your opinion on booking my own excursions (or at least some of them) when taking a cruise. We (my wife and 6 year old son and I) are doing a Royal Caribbean cruise to Belize, Honduras and Mexico for 7 nights in February. The excursions are far more expensive than the RC cruise we did in Alaska and the Disney Cruise we did in Eastern Caribbean. Thanks ~ MZ

#TravelTuesday Q&A: Family Friendly European River Cruises

European River Cruises

Q: Do you have some tips about European river cruise lines? My mom wants to take me, my sister and my 19-year-old on a special vacation this summer. I know some cruise companies appeal to a broader audience (we are trying to avoid a “nursing home” cruise). Any ideas? Thanks! — Susie B.

The Cruise Ship in Your Back Yard: Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas

If it’s been a while since you took a cruise, or fall into the “A week at sea with my family? No way!” set of mind, then it’s time to reexamine the family vacation options on the high seas.

Cruise lines have been hard at work making ships family friendly, and an extension of this is creating easily accessible cruise ports around the country, eliminating the need to book expensive flights to get to a cruise. There are now launch points to a cruise vacation everywhere from San Francisco to Galveston,  New Orleans to Savannah, and even right in Bayonne, New Jersey, where I recently hopped on the newest ship at sea, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas.
