Day Trip: Museum of the Moving Image

Museum of the Moving Image

Does your family love movies, television, and all things digital? Then the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, NY, is the Day Trip destination for you!

My family visited the museum for the first time this past weekend and everyone — from the 9 year old to the 48 year old — had a blast. We’d recommend it to anyone looking for a day trip in the New York City area. If you go, plan to spend several hours visiting the three floors of exhibitions, which offer lots of interactive activities. (Cool bonus: Museum of the Moving Image is right across the street from the famous Kaufman Astoria Studios, where Orange is the New Black, Sesame Street, and many other shows and movies are filmed.)

Day Trip: Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ

morris museum

The Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ, is a wonderful Day Trip destination for families of all ages. The second largest museum in New Jersey, Morris Museum offers permanent exhibitions, special collections, and a theater, all located in the Georgian-style Twin Oaks mansion.

I took my Gilmore Girls to visit the Morris Museum last week (for free thanks to our library’s Museums Passes — thanks Montclair Public Library!) and we couldn’t believe we had waited all these years to discover this local gem.

Get Creative at Newark Museum’s New Year-Round MakerSpace

Newark Museum

Newark Museumin Newark, NJ, is one of the hidden family travel gems of New Jersey with lots to do in a manageable space that doesn’t overwhelm kids, including a great planetarium, Dynamic Earth geology exhibit, and fun “Generation Fit” space where kids can burn off energy while learning about health and fitness.

Its newest addition to its family-friendly programs is a new permanent Makerspace. It helps kids appreciate the museum’s art and culture exhibits by letting them create personal versions of the art they see in the museum using clay, building materials, and even 3D printers. Guest blogger Ken Dowell of OffTheLeash checked out the cool new exhibit for Playground:
