Spongebob Makes a Splash on Broadway and It’s Fantastically Fun

Spongebob on Broadway

If nautical nonsense be something you wish — along with great original music, bright and bold neon lights, silly sound effects, AND a confetti cannon — then take the family to see Spongebob Squarepants the Broadway Musical.

I confess I was never a fan of Nickelodeon’s animated Spongebob Squarepants and his friends in the Bikini Bottom cartoon world. However, after seeing the musical with my family, I now have a thing for the eternally optimistic sea sponge. Ethan Slater, in his Broadway debut, manages to bring the quirky cartoon character to life with a high energy, limber goofiness that is infectiously lovable.

Once on This Island Transforms Broadway into the Sunny Caribbean

Once on This Island

It was a snowy, Arctic-like ,freezing Friday when my family and I headed into New York to see the revival of Once on This Island at Circle in the Square on Broadway. But an amazing thing happened as we entered the intimate theater on 50th Street: It became summer.

Great November Getaways for NJ Teachers’ Convention School Break

Getaways for NJ Teachers' Convention | mid-hudson valley family travel

Guess what New Jersey parents? Your kids are about to have a 4-day weekend! November 9 – 12 is the NJEA Convention, aka the NJ Teachers’ Convention, when all public schools are closed while teachers attend a professional development conference in Atlantic City. Why not take advantage of the break and plan a getaway with the family?

The good news is that the crowds are usually thin, and prices low, for this long weekend in many destinations since only New Jersey public schools have off. (Which is not to say there are no crowds. At Disney World these November dates are called “New Jersey Week,” and the theme parks — and flights to Orlando, and actually Florida in general — are packed! And if you ask your kids, they’d probably like to avoid seeing their teachers in Atlantic City….)

Ready to take a break? Here are some great getaway options for NJ Teachers’ Convention School Break:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical is Scrumdiddlyumptious.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical

Thanks to the 2-For-1 NYC Broadway Week deal, I scored discounted tickets and took my family to see the musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway last weekend. I’m so happy to report that the show is scrumdiddlyumptious.

The truth is anyone who is a real Roald Dahl fan obviously loves Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, the 1971 film adaptation of his book Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Which means there is no one besides the late, great Gene Wilder who can truly capture the eccentric, equal parts charismatic and creepy candy man. Mention the awful 2015 remake and you get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir!

Tony award winner Christian Borle, however, comes awfully close to Wilder’s perfection.
