We Found a REALLY Patriotic Destination to Celebrate July 4 (Think Colonial and Williamsburg)

Hi traveling family friends, hope your summer is off to a great start! With school over and camps just starting to kick into gear, you may be looking for a way to celebrate the Fourth of July with your family on a quick driveable getaway that gives you a chance to appreciate our country’s history. We’re thinking Colonial Williamsburg is a perfect fit!

Basically, Colonial Williamsburg rolls out the Revolutionary red carpet for the holiday, with parades, special events, and awesome fireworks all taking place where founding fathers like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and George Mason established and instituted the principles and policies that led to the founding of our nation. We even have an hour-by-hour guide to all the fun, below.

Here’s what’s happening:

Shields Tavern Breakfast Celebration with Thomas Jefferson (8am): Before the reading of the Declaration of Independence, guests are invited to have a casual breakfast experience with Thomas Jefferson in the beautiful Pavilion Area. $39.95 per adult, $24.95 per child. Reservations are required.
A Reading of the Declaration of Independence (9:30am): Start this patriotic day with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence by a young Thomas Jefferson at the Capitol West Balcony. Hear the stirring sounds of the Revolutionary War field music with Colonial Williamsburg’s award-winning Fifes and Drums.
A Salute to the States (10am): A special muster in commemoration of the anniversary of the birth of our nation — a salute to the original thirteen states.
Create! For Independence Day (10:15am and again at 1:30pm): Celebrate Independence Day at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. At “Create! For Independence Day” you can create a patriotic work of art to take home.
A Reading of the Declaration of Independence (12pm): In case you didn’t make it to the early reading, be sure to catch the noon reading of the Declaration of Independence by several diverse members of the 18th-Century community at the colonial Courthouse steps. After you can listen to the talented Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums.
Summer Breeze Concert Series (4-9pm): See the U. S. Air Force Heritage of America Band perform on the lawn of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg from 4pm-6pm, followed by a performance by Brasswind from 7pm-9pm. The event is free and open to the public.
Chownings Independence Day Celebration (6-9pm): A VIP private celebration featuring great food, great beverages, fun games, and live music before the fireworks A great way to relax with friends and family. $76 per adult, $38 per child. Reservations are required.
Lights of Freedom – A 4th of July Procession & Fireworks (9pm): Colonial Williamsburg’s 4th of July is a trip-worthy summer tradition. Launched from behind the Governor’s Palace, what began in Colonial times as the firing of guns and lighting of fireworks to celebrate major events has added a modern musical element so the light show is set to Americana favorites like “Yankee Doodle,” “my country Tis of Thee,” “This Land is Your Land” and “God Bless America,” just to name a few of the patriotic favorites.
