Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is one of our favorite family travel destinations and the perfect place to learn about the history of women in the United States at places like the National Archives, which houses letters, photographs, and film highlighting women’s achievements through time. You can also celebrate women at events like the museum’s “We the Women” 100th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote. Learn even more at the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, which are all joining in commemorating and encouraging the celebration of the vital role women have played in American history. The famous poster of Rosie the Riveter might be the ultimate image symbolizing female strength and empowerment for generations of Americans. That brawny image is a vivid reminder of the women who took over traditionally male jobs during World War II, pumping out airplanes and ships for the war effort. On most Fridays, the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park hosts “Rosie Fridays” where visitors can visit with real female Home Front workers from WWII. (Note: offers over 150 vacation rentals and hotel rooms in Richmond ranging in price from $60-$950.)

New York City

Many of the best Women’s History Month events are happening in the Big Apple. At the New-York Historical Society, a place we highly recommend, you can see a 17-minute documentary narrated by Meryl Streep that profiles significant women in history–including Lillian Wald, who founded the Henry Street Settlement; suffragist Addie Hunton; birth control activist Margaret Sanger and Clara Lemlich, who led the strike of shirtwaist workers in the garment industry in 1909. On March 25th, the Museum of the City of New York will hold a symposium celebrating their current exhibition, Beyond Suffrage: A Century of New York Women in Politics. This will feature keynote speaker, Samhita Mukhopadhyay, new Executive Editor of Teen Vogue and co-editor of the 2017 book, “Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance and Revolution in Trump’s America. (Note: Tripping offers more than 11,000 vacation rentals in NYC ranging in price from $24-$15,000)

Baltimore, Maryland

Celebrating women’s history doesn’t always have to be all lectures and exhibits. The National Aquarium in Baltimore is hosting an evening of live performances, exhibits and activities honoring women’s history around the world. There will be live music by all-female group Roumana, partnering with the Barakaat Middle Eastern Dance Company. There will also be performances from Dance Baltimore, an interactive Harriet Tubman performance, and a special collaboration called “Fantasy of the Ocean from Land to Sea: A Music, Dance and Visual Art Journey.” There will even be a trivia game so you can test your knowledge of historical female figures. If you want to brush up on your history first, there will be a special exhibit celebrating women’s accomplishments in science, technology, engineering and math. (Note: Tripping offers more than 350 vacation rentals in Baltimore ranging in price from $36-$750.)

Seneca Falls, NY

Seneca Falls was the home to the first woman’s rights convention. Today, you can visit the National Women’s Hall of Fame, which honors bold women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who fought for women’s equality; or the Women’s Rights National Historical Park. The 6.8 acre park, established in 1980, was the site of the Seneca Falls Convention.  It connects to the Votes For Women History Trail, a route that links a string of other important sites in upstate New York. (Note: Tripping offers over 40 short-term rentals in Seneca Falls ranging in price from $51-$1,137)
