We love the southern California charms of San Diego, which comes with an added bonus of being just a short 45 minute drive north to beautiful Carlsbad. Carlsbad offers 7 miles of coastline, world-class resorts, shopping, golf, lots of family fun — including the kid-pleasing LEGOLAND — and really great food.
We spent a few days in this cool California city and, while there is so much more to enjoy on longer visits, here are 3 things you must do in Carlsbad with your family:
An entire theme park based on LEGO. How could it not be fun? There are rides for both big kids and little builders (go left from the entrance to hit preschooler favorites, right for the roller coaster), and myriad opportunities to marvel at larger-than-life LEGO creations such as buildings, bridges, Star Wars, and more. One caveat: Don’t expect to get past the gift shop without some plastic blocks to build with at home (not the worst unplugged activity when you come to think of it).
Don’t Miss: Granny’s Apple Fries. This delicious treat of fried Granny Smith apples, dusted with cinnamon sugar, and topped with vanilla cream dipping sauce is drool-worthy.
Budding musicians will love this hands-on museum. Located on the first floor of the National Association of Music Merchants building, it’s a real highlight for music loving families. You’ll travel through interactive exhibitions of music from the marches and rags of the early 1900s, through the evolutionary sounds of jazz, folk, rock ‘n roll and pop, to the cross cultural digital expressions of today’s connected world.
Don’t Miss: The Innovation Studio exhibition allows you to play a variety of instruments in a studio setting.
An outdoor and indoor playground for all ages with lounges, community tables, a rooftop bar, lawn games, really good BBQ, and great beer and cocktails. (I enjoyed quite a few of The Phoebe Cates cocktails and am trying to recreate the fabulous drink at home.)
