#TravelTuesday Q&A: Grown-up Getaway in South Florida

Florida Keys | family travel

Q: Hey Playgound! Vacationing with kids is great but do you have any recommendations for a winter weekend couples getaway to Miami/Florida Keys? Just a quiet spot with good food, good beach, good room. Nothing wild, loud, fancy or with kids! Thanks — Sarah D.

A:  Hi Sarah! A kid-free getaway sounds great — we’re big fans of adult time alone, even if it’s a staycation at a local hotel.

The Florida Keys closest to Miami would be my first choice for you.  Islamorada is about a 90 minute drive from Miami, and is the location of two great properties: The Moorings Village Resort, which has 18 individual beach cottages on a sweet beach (a rarity for The Keys) that used to be a coconut plantation and  Casa Morada (above) which has 16 suites that feel like Mexican haciendas on a private island that will make you feel like you’ve been transported to a tropical island.

Florida KeysI’ve also heard good things about Tranquility Bay  which is in Marathon, the first Key in the chain, and only about an hour from Miami. It has a larger range of room options (but still less than 100 rooms) and is more budget-friendly, but also has a great beach as well as a spa (you may, however, run into families here).

As far as Miami Beach goes, it’s not the first place I think of for quiet, but you will find great food and beautiful hotels. Try heading to western side of  South Beach and The Mondrian, which faces Biscayne Bay. It’s super swanky, with a luxe lounge, trendy restaurant, and big pool. It’s not family-friendly (score!) and it’s in a quiet neighborhood. It’s only a few miles from the bustle of Ocean Drive if you want to check it out, and it also doesn’t carry the hefty price tag of the luxe South Beach hotels.

Have a great time!
