#TravelTuesday Q&A: Why Puerto Rico is Great for a Girlfriend Getaway

Puerto Rico

Q: Hi, I’m wondering about going to Puerto Rico for a girlfriend getaway weekend. Are there any resorts you would recommend? This is for a girls trip, so definitely looking for a spot that’s kind of lively, nice pool and beach and good food. We’re shooting for a 5 day/4 night trip in late June. Any insight you have would be great! — Brett S.

A: Hi Brett, Puerto Rico is one of my favorite destinations and I write about it often, so you’ve come to the right place! It’s super-easy to visit from the NYC-area (there are numerous direct flights which are only 3.5 hours), and since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, you don’t need a passport to visit, your cell phone will work without roaming, and you don’t need to convert money.

For your friends’ getaway (so fun!), there are a few spots I’d recommend.

Puerto Rico

If you stay in San Juan, you won’t need a car to get around and you’ll have plenty of dining and nightlife options at your fingertips. One top option is the elegant Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, a historic hotel on a gorgeous stretch of beach right in the heart of happening Condado. The hotel was completely renovated and now features huge suites that would be great for you and your friends, in addition to a luxe spa and a great restaurant.

Just down the street is La Concha, a sleek, modern hotel with the same great location as the Vanderbilt, but with a more boutique hotel feel. There are multilevel pools, a photo-op restaurant that looks like you’re eating in a giant shell, and a hip and fun (though grown up) vibe.

If you’re up for a short drive, El Conquistador (a Waldorf Astoria resort) is one of my favorite spots on the island. The sprawling resort is big enough that you never have to leave the property to find things to do; the spa is incredible, there’s golf and tennis, plus a private beach island you reach by catamaran. Las Casitas is a resort within a resort with multi-room townhouse units that would be fun for you and your friends to stay in. There are several private pools at Las Casitas as well as fabulous service that will make you feel like VIPs.

Have a great trip!
