#TravelTuesday Q&A: Family Friendly European River Cruises

European River Cruises

Q: Do you have some tips about European river cruise lines? My mom wants to take me, my sister and my 19-year-old on a special vacation this summer. I know some cruise companies appeal to a broader audience (we are trying to avoid a “nursing home” cruise). Any ideas? Thanks! — Susie B.

A: Hi Susie, European river cruises are becoming more and more popular, and as a result, several companies are trying make their ships more family friendly (although you’re right in thinking many river cruises appeal to an older demographic).

Proof that kids are welcome on the river? Adventures by Disney will start offering river cruises (using AmaWaterways’ modern ships that have pools and free Wi-Fi) this summer. They’ll offer more activities and shore excursions (think strudel making in Austria) than regular river cruises, which would be fun with your multi-generational group:

Another option is Uniworld, which offers family cruises that include a 50% discount for kids 4 to 18! Their “generations” cruises focus on activities for the entire family, with programs that include cooking, arts and crafts, and “active” pursuits (kayaking in Venice!), that are among the most extensive I’ve seen offered.

Tauck, which specializes in small group travel, has created special “bridge” family river cruises specifically designed for intergenerational groups. River cruises for families include enticing shore excursions such as a private dinner in a castle in Germany.

Happy sailing!
