Whether you’re driving across the country or just down the road, good travel tunes the whole family enjoys makes any journey better. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re reviewing a new family music CD about journeys and Latino heritage — Mi Viaje: De Nuevo León to the New York Island (My Journey: From Nuevo Leon to the New York Island) by Sonia De Los Santos.
Since 2007, Sonia De Los Santos — who was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico — has been touring the world, singing in English and Spanish, playing guitar, mandolin, and jarana, and lighting up the stage with Grammy Award winning group Dan Zanes And Friends.
My family has been a fan of De Los Santos since seeing her perform with Dan Zanes. Her voice is sweet, but strong, and her love of her culture shines through in her music.
For Mi Viaje, De Los Santos assembled a multicultural, cast of musicians and singers to help share her heritage and take listeners on a celebratory musical journey from Northern Mexico to the Latin American cultural heart of NYC.
Mi Viaje is a unique collection of old and new songs that reflect the colors, rhythms, and sounds of the Americas. Most of the songs on Mi Viaje are sung in Spanish with origins from Mexico, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Basque Country and the United States. The CD also includes two original compositions, “La Golondrina” and “Tan Feliz,” written by De Los Santos, plus stand out tracks “This Land is your Land” (Esta es tu tierra), a remake of Pete Seeger’s beloved song, “If I had a Hammer” (El Martillo), “Tan Feliz” featuring Dan Zanes and Friends, and “Chocolate” an interactive song based on a traditional Mexican stirring rhyme.
