#WTD2015: World Tourism Day—Travel Is Much More Than a Vacation

World Tourism Day

We travel for many reasons: To relax and unwind, give our children life experiences and lasting memories, to see the world. But every time we travel, for whatever reason, something more important happens — we become part of a global movement.

Tourism makes an important impact on countries and communities around the world. Each year on September 27, the United Nations World Tourism Organization celebrates World Tourism Day to bring awareness to the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.Today, Playground joins the celebration and the conversation.

The theme of this year´s World Tourism Day is “One Billion Tourists, One Billion Opportunities.” Today, more than one billion tourists travel to an international destination every year, making tourism a leading economic sector, contributing 10% of global GDP and 6% of the world´s total exports. And hopefully, in developing countries, sustainable tourism leads to true economic development.

So you see, travelling is much more than a vacation.

  1. Travel is my favorite activity! I travel alone mostly, and have seen so much of Europe in 2013-2014 when I was studying to get my Master’s degree in Florence. I love to meet new people, photograph everything I see, and become part of the culture for a few days. It makes my life richer to travel!
